Legal & Compliance

Last updated: June 5, 2026

Western Pursuit is a licensed Federal Firearms Licensee operating out of Preston, Idaho. We take our compliance obligations seriously. This page summarizes the legal terms that apply to firearms-related business with Western Pursuit. Specific terms for any actual transaction will be confirmed in writing before money changes hands.

Federal Firearms License

Western Pursuit holds Federal Firearms License (FFL) #9-82-041-07-8H-05902, issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). A current copy of the FFL is available for review at the shop.

Firearm transfers and shipping

All firearms transfers must be conducted in person at the shop or shipped from one licensed FFL to another.

  • We cannot ship firearms directly to individuals. Firearms purchased remotely must be shipped to a licensed FFL in your area for transfer to you.
  • For incoming FFL transfers (a firearm shipped to us from another FFL on your behalf), you must complete an ATF Form 4473 and pass a NICS background check in person before taking possession of the firearm.
  • We reserve the right to refuse any transfer at our sole discretion, including if we have any reason to believe the transfer would violate federal, state, or local law, or if the buyer cannot satisfactorily complete the required checks.

Buyer responsibility for state and local laws

You, the buyer or transferee, are solely responsible for knowing and complying with the firearms laws applicable to where you live and where the firearm will be possessed, transported, or used.

This includes (without limitation):

  • State and local restrictions on specific firearms, magazines, or accessories
  • State and local registration, permitting, or licensing requirements
  • Restrictions on transfers across state lines
  • Waiting periods, age limits, and background-check requirements that exceed federal minimums

Some firearms, magazines, and accessories that are lawful in Idaho are restricted or prohibited in other jurisdictions. If you are not certain whether an item is lawful where it will be possessed, do not proceed with the transaction until you have confirmed compliance. We can answer general questions but we are not a substitute for legal counsel in your state.

Age requirements

Federal law sets minimum ages for the purchase and possession of firearms and ammunition:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age to purchase a long gun (rifle or shotgun) or long-gun ammunition.
  • You must be at least 21 years of age to purchase a handgun or handgun ammunition.

Government-issued photo identification proving age is required for any in-person firearms transaction.

Some states impose higher age limits or additional requirements; those apply on top of the federal minimums.

Prohibited persons

Federal law prohibits certain categories of people from purchasing, possessing, or receiving firearms or ammunition, including (without limitation):

  • Persons convicted of a felony or any crime punishable by more than one year in prison
  • Fugitives from justice
  • Unlawful users of, or persons addicted to, any controlled substance
  • Persons adjudicated as mentally defective or committed to a mental institution
  • Persons unlawfully in the United States or admitted under nonimmigrant visas (with certain exceptions)
  • Persons dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces
  • Persons subject to certain domestic-violence restraining orders
  • Persons convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence
  • Persons who have renounced United States citizenship

If you are unsure whether any of these apply to you, consult an attorney before attempting to purchase or receive a firearm. Knowingly providing false information on ATF Form 4473 is a federal felony.

NFA items

Western Pursuit is planning to expand into National Firearms Act (NFA) transfers (suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and similar). NFA transfers are subject to additional federal requirements including ATF approval, a $200 transfer tax (in most cases), and substantial wait times.

NFA transfers are not yet available. We are not accepting NFA orders or deposits at this time. Contact us to be added to the list of customers we will notify when NFA transfers go live.

Custom rifle builds — deposits and timelines

Custom rifle builds are quoted and contracted individually. Before any work begins, you will receive a written specification and quote that you must approve in writing.

  • deposit is typically required before parts are ordered. The specific deposit amount, refund terms, and project cancellation terms will be documented in your build agreement.
  • Timelines are estimates. Actual completion depends on component availability, lead times from third-party suppliers, scope changes, and other factors outside our control.
  • Once components have been ordered or modified specifically for your build, deposits may be partially or fully non-refundable. Refund and cancellation terms will be clearly stated in your build agreement.
  • Final balance is due before the firearm leaves the shop or is shipped to a transferring FFL.

Gunsmithing and service work

For gunsmithing, scope mounting, coating, and other service work:

  • Quotes given before work begins are estimates based on the information provided to us. Final pricing may vary if the actual work required differs from the original assessment. We will not exceed an estimate without first contacting you.
  • Customer-supplied parts must be free of defects. We are not responsible for failure of parts we did not supply.
  • Firearms left at the shop are subject to our intake and storage terms, including reasonable storage fees for firearms not picked up within a stated window after completion or notice of completion.
  • Specific service terms will be documented at intake.

Pricing and availability

All pricing, product specifications, and availability information on this website, in marketing materials, or in verbal quotes are subject to change without notice. Nothing presented on this Site constitutes a binding offer to sell. Final terms of any sale or service will be confirmed in writing before the transaction is completed.

Manufacturer warranties

Firearms, optics, accessories, and components carry the warranty (if any) offered by their respective manufacturers. Western Pursuit makes no separate warranty on third-party products beyond what the manufacturer provides. Warranty claims on factory products are handled per the manufacturer’s process — we are happy to help you navigate this where possible.

Work performed in-house by Western Pursuit is warranted as described in the applicable service agreement or build agreement. Modifications or repairs by anyone other than Western Pursuit may void any warranty on our work.

Safety

Firearms are inherently dangerous. The user is solely responsible for the safe handling, storage, transport, and use of any firearm. Always follow the four universal rules of firearms safety:

  1. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
  2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target and you have decided to fire.
  4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

Store firearms securely and away from unauthorized users, particularly children. Idaho law and federal law both impose liability for unsafe storage in certain circumstances.

ATF and law-enforcement cooperation

Western Pursuit complies with all applicable federal, state, and local laws governing the firearms industry. We cooperate fully with the ATF and other law-enforcement agencies in lawful inspections, traces, and investigations.

Records of firearms transactions are maintained as required by federal law and are made available to authorized agencies upon proper request.

Disputes

The dispute-resolution and governing-law provisions in our Terms of Use apply to any dispute arising out of your use of this Site. Disputes related to an actual purchase, custom build, or service will be governed by the written agreement for that transaction; if no separate agreement exists, the Terms of Use govern by default.
